CHAPTER TWELVE

“ACTUALLY, WE’D RATHER you didn’t, mate,” Rourke drawled as he dropped the first one to the ground with a hard right to the diaphragm.

“It’s none of his business anyway.” Grange chuckled as he dropped the second man.

Upstairs there was a sudden thud, followed by an even harder and louder thud that made several rhythmic thumps.

The Americans rushed into the hall to find the big man, Miguel, lying at the foot of the steps with a blank stare at the men just joining him.

He started to speak, but Rourke had him gagged and tied up in seconds. “I’ll deal with you shortly,” he said, and in a tone that chilled.

“Hurry,” Machado said, taking the lead up the stairs. “We cannot afford to let Sapara escape.”

But there was no hope of that. Carson, the Plains Indian, had the other guard hog-tied on the floor, the door open, and two dazed people, wrapped in a blanket, staring up at him over the sights of a .45 ACP from a thick llama skin on the floor of the massive, luxurious office.

“Carson, you’re a wonder!” Grange exclaimed, patting the other man on the back.

“Tell Eb Scott,” the tall man drawled. “I need a raise.”

“Machado!” Arturo Sapara blurted out. His face was flushed and he looked stoned.

“You were not expecting me, I see,” Machado said coldly. “The first lesson you should have learned is to expect retribution.”

Sapara struggled to his feet, leaving the embarrassed woman to struggle into the furry llama skin he’d left behind. “I can explain!” he began, and moved toward the desk.

Grange was there first. “I’m afraid you won’t be able to do that.” He turned off the electronic communications equipment. “You see, we’ve fried your comms. There won’t be any way for your military to respond. In fact, just about now, General Lopez should be telling the armed forces to stand down.”

“You cannot do this!” Sapara said furiously. “I am the ruler of a sovereign nation!”

“Not really,” Machado replied pleasantly. “You have just been deposed. You will, of course, be spending the next fifty years of your life in prison for high treason. Lopez and most of my men will be happy to testify to this.”

“I will testify, too,” the forgotten young woman wrapped in llama skins said furiously. “He has my father in jail. He said he would kill him if I did not do what he said. My husband is at home with our children, and I had to leave them weeping. He—” she pointed a shaking finger at Sapara “—came with that butcher Miguel to take me away to sleep with him!”

“I will have them all killed!” Sapara yelled at her.

“You won’t be doing any more killing,” Grange said quietly. “Carson, escort the former president of Barrera to our least comfortable cell downstairs, if you please. And send Romero to guard him.” He smiled as he said it.

“Not that fat pig! I fired him tonight!” Sapara yelled.

“I have rehired him at a better salary and made him my chief of police,” Machado said with a grin.
